Onsted Football Opens Season with 34-14 Victory Over Fennville

The Onsted Varsity Football team opened the 2019 season with, last season playoff qualifier,  the Fennville Blackhawks, and walked away with a 34-14 victory.

After a scoreless first quarter, which saw both teams give the ball away on turnovers, the Wildcats struck 1st early in the second quarter on a 25 yd screen pass from Junior quarterback Dylan Terryberry to Senior Rourke Barth for a 6-0 lead.  Fennville tried to answer, as they took the ball down the field and had a first and goal at the Onsted 7 yd line.  However the Wildcats defense was up to the challenge and held the Blackhawks out of the endzone and took a 6-0 lead into the locker room.

After the break, the Wildcats roared out of the locker room and took over the 3rd quarter.  Getting the ball first, the Cats drove down the field and scored on a 12 yd run by Senior Travis Hill.  Barth was able to punch it in for the 2pt conversion and the Wildcats now lead 14-0.  After the defense forced a punt on the next drive, Onsted found the endzone again when Terryberry connected with Barth for their 2nd TD catch and run on the night from 40 yds out, putting Onsted up 20-0.   But the Cats were not done in the quarter.  Hill was able to score again with 2 minutes left in the 3rd on a 17 yd TD run and connect on the PAT to make the score 27-0 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Blackhawks were finally able to break through on the scoreboard when they found the endzone on a 20 yd run to make the score 27-7.  However, the Wildcats were able to answer when Junior Greg Denkins hit pay dirt on an 8 yd TD run late in the game to make the score 34-7.  Fennville was able to punch one last score in on the final drive of the game to make the final score 34-14.

The Wildcats were lead offensively by Hill who finished with 123 yds on 13 carries and 2 TDs.  Terryberry completed 5 of 8 passes for 160 yds and 2 scores.  Barth contributed 68 yds receiving and had 2 TD catches.  Defensively Junior Logan Robarge led the defense with 6 tackles while Senior Josh VanEtten had 5 tackles.

The Wildcats (1-0) travel to Lakeview on Friday, Sept. 6th to take on the Lakeview Wildcats.  Game time is 7:00pm.
